Karate means "empty (or open) hand," thus it's unarmed fighting techniques. One of the most widely practiced styles today is Shotokan karate, which was founded by Gichin Funokoshi.

Tae Kwon Do is another popular martial art. Loosely translated, it means "the way of the hand and foot." It is from Korea and is a blend of indigenous martial arts and Japanese karate.

Tae Kwon Do has enjoyed a boom in popularity since it was accepted as a medal sport for the Sydney Olympics in 2000. Tae Kwon Do is characterized by impressive kicks, which at advanced levels can be aimed at head level.

The Upstate is home to many karate and Tae Kwon Do schools. But it's home to some rare styles of martial arts as well.

We dove in to look at some of the schools that aren't immediately brought to mind when one thinks of martial arts.
